My name is Deáni Mostert. I was born in South Africa, but have lived in Canada for most of my life. I consider myself to be of multicultural heritage, which is likely why I am deeply interested in learning about cultures outside of those I identify with. I am a UBC graduate - I have a degree in anthropology with a focus on archaeology. I am passionate about history, heritage, archaeology, research, and how cultural importance can be imbued in material objects. I love working with artifacts by learning their associated stories and meanings. Material impacts can inform us about the lives of past people, and help us to understand how current cultures develop and exist now.

My work at the museum involves record-keeping, maintenance, and conservation of Sncewips' various collections, which include artifacts, archives, and library. What excites me about working at Sncewips Heritage Museum and Westbank First Nation is being able to experience a living culture while working on the preservation of syilx history. Sncewips is a center where visitors can come to be educated about the community and the Okanagan region that has been occupied by Indigenous peoples since time immemorial.

Come visit us and experience a change of perspective – we are truly dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting art, artifact and archival collections that reflect the heritage of the syilx/Okanagan people.
